The Relationship between Helicopter Parenting and Coping Laureca Landwehr University of Southern Mississippi The Relationship between Helicopter Parenting and Coping Helicopter parenting recently developed in the parenting literature. Helicopter parenting is distinguished from the three major types of parenting styles most commonly discussed, permissive, authoritarian, and authoritative (Baumrind, 1966; Padilla-Walker Nelson, 2012). Helicopter parenting differs from Baumrind’s three styles by the element of control and intrusion (Schiffrin, Liss, Miles-McLean, Geary, Erchull, Tashner, 2014; LeMoyne Buchanan, 2011). Research has found helicopter parenting to have negative effects on emerging adults’ mental health, medication use, and poor coping skills (Segrin, Woszidlo, Givertz, Montgomery, 2013). Research does not agree on how to categorize coping skills (Folkman Lazarus, 1980; Endler Parker, 1990; Seiffge-Krenke Beyers, 2005; Mahmoud, Staten, Hall, Lennie, 2012; Jorgensen Dusek, 1990). However, these styles can be related to problem-, emotion-, and avoidant-foc used coping. Individual characteristics that affect the usage of coping styles include sex, socioeconomic status, and race or ethnicity (Endler Parker, 1990; Hassan, Mallozzi, Dhingra, Haden, 2011; Howerton Van Gundy, 2009).
